Southampton and Newcastle have both failed in moves to sign Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
According to reports in France from L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, both clubs have seen bids rejected by the Bundesliga side.
Both Premier League teams are interested in strengthening their attacks this summer and had both highlighted Mateta as a potential target.

His 14 Bundesliga goals last season have done enough to convince clubs to make a move for the player.
It is claimed that the bids were in the region of £15-£20m, but they would need to be doubled to convince Mainz to sell.
With Salomon Rondon’s immediate future remaining up in the air, Newcastle will be looking for alternative striker targets, in case they miss out on the Venezuelan forward.
