Pep Guardiola wanted to bring Liverpool star Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich when the Spaniard was at the Bavarian giants, according to a recent interview with the forward.

The Senegalese attacker revealed to Sport Bild that Guardiola had an interest in him when the forward was playing his football for Red Bull Salzburg.

Mane had impressed Guardiola during a friendly against Bayern, but would eventually make the move to Southampton rather than Munich.

Mane revealed that:

In January 2014 we had a friendly against Bayern in Salzburg, the coach was then still Pep Guardiola and we surprised them with our way of playing.

My adviser Björn Bezemer later informed me that there was contact with Bayern after the match, but I don’t think they were really interested.

The attacker would eventually move to Liverpool, whilst Guardiola would replace Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City.

Both are now fighting for the Premier League title, with Pep’s City sitting top on goal difference at the moment.

However, Mane will play against Bayern again next week, with Liverpool taking on Bayern in the UEFA Champions League.
