Manchester City are hoping to beat the likes of Barcelona, Tottenham and Bayern to the signature of Matthijs de Ligt with a €60 million bid.
According to Sport, as cited on Sport Witness, Pep Guardiola’s men have lodged a bid to sign the player, with interest in his services mounting.
The reports may come as a surprise to some, with Guardiola already spending big on central defenders during his time in the Premier League.
After chopping and changing, Guardiola appears to have finally settled on a partnership of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.
Barcelona had been among the favourites to land de Ligt, who they have earmarked as a long-term replacement for Gerard Pique.
De Ligt was heavily linked with a move away from Ajax during the summer, with Juventus among the many teams keen to land the Dutchman.
Ajax are once again facing a battle to keep hold of their young stars, with de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek all attracting interest from some of Europe’s top sides.
