Jerome Boateng has revealed exactly what he told Jose Mourinho on the phone when he turned down a move to Manchester United this summer.
The Mirror report that Boateng has been quoted saying it would have been hard for him to leave Bayern, despite the uncertainty that surrounded his future during the summer transfer window.
Both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for the defender, but he opted to remain at Bayern.
Mourinho was particularly keen to bring the player to Old Trafford, but after an offer was made, Boateng personally phoned the Manchester United boss to explain his reasons behind turning the move down.
I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me. I explained to Jose that it’s difficult to leave Bayern, and if I do, everything has to be in place to top this club.
United were desperate to sign a central defender this summer and were linked with the likes of Diego Godin, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire, but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of the trio.
