Axel Witsel had an offer on the table from Manchester United prior to joining Borussia Dortmund, according to his agent Paul Stefani.
As reported by the Goal, the Belgian international had several teams chasing his signature once it became known he would be returning to European football.
Dortmund were not the only side in the running for the midfielder, both Napoli and United had expressed an interest.
Stefani confirmed that the player would become a key figure at Dortmund, something that he could not be guaranteed of in Italy or England, should he have made the move.
There were other candidates. Manchester United wanted him, Napoli too. But I told Axel: ‘At Dortmund you are the number one, at Manchester you are one of the many… and at Napoli too’.
After spending some time in the Chinese Super League, Witsel completed a move to Borussia Dortmund earlier this week.
Dortmund completed what could be considered as a ‘bargain deal’ for Witsel after activating his €20 million buy-out clause.
The player is also believed to have taken a pay-cut in order to complete the move.
