Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is close to joining Premier League side Stoke City after leaving Schalke on a free transfer.
The Stoke Sentinel reports that the club have identified the Cameroon international as a direct replacement for Marko Arnautovic, who left the club to join West Ham for £25 million.
Speaking after a 2-1 win over Germany’s RB Leipzig, Mark Hughes was keen to not get too excited about a deal for the forward.
You can never say it’s done until it is. I’ve had experiences where clubs have just jumped in at the last moment when you’ve done all the work and they’re able to convince players. We’ll just hang fire until it’s actually official.
Choupo-Moting left Schalke at the end of last season as he began to fall out of favour at the Bundesliga side.
The forward, who can play across the front three started just 19 games domestically for Schalke last season, scoring just three times in the league.
The 28-year-old saw most of his football come from the left-wing and that is likely where he will slot into Hughes’ plans at Stoke.
