In a press conference ahead of Germany’s World Cup Qualifier against San Marino, head coach Joachim Low has confirmed that Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start.
Since returning from injury, Gundogan has been in fine form for Pep Guardiola’s side scoring three goals in seven Premier League appearances.
In the press conference, the 56-year-old confirmed that Mario Gomez will start against San Marino and that Bernd Leno will start in goal in the friendly against Italy, next week.
Earlier in the week it was confirmed that the first choice Germany goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, would miss both the World Cup Qualifier against San Marino and the friendly against Italy due to illness.
Also absent for Joachim Löw is Bayer Leverkusen youngster Julian Brandt. The 20-year-old withdrew from the National side following an infection.
Preparation for Joachim Löw hasn’t been great as the World Cup winning manager has had to deal with key players Jerome Boateng and Toni Kroos pulling out of the squad through injury.
Germany are top of Group C with nine points from their opening three games, Azerbaijan are their nearest rivals with seven points, they travel to Windsor Park on Friday to play Northern Ireland.
