Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos as an alternative to Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld, but face competition from Chelsea.
The Mirror report that United remain keen on the Belgian defender, who is being tipped to leave Spurs this summer.
With Spurs reluctant to sell Alderweireld to United, Jose Mourinho’s men are preparing alternative targets.
The 29-year-old, who has been ever-present for Dortmund this season, is being valued at £20 million by the Bundesliga outfit.
United will be in the market for a central defender this summer. Mourinho has been unable to find a settled partnership at the back.
Mourinho has used both a back four and back three on occasions this season but has not been able to find the perfect partner for Eric Bailly.
Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have both been in and out of the United side, while Victor Lindelof has impressed in spells.
