Leon Goretzka is perhaps the most sought-after midfielder in European football right now, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all having been linked with a move for the Schalke star in recent months.

The Germany international is set to become a free agent at the end of the season when his contract with Schalke expires and he can begin negotiating a pre-contract deal this month ahead of a future move.

No official word on the midfield’s decision has been made yet, but Schalke are eager for a resolution to be reached in the near future so they can begin to plan for his eventual departure, whether it’s this month or at the end of the season.

Chairman of Schalke’s supervisory board Clemens Tonnies, as quoted by the Mirror, has reaffirmed that the club expects an answer on his next step soon.

We’ve done everything to ensure he stays. In January, he wants to say what he’s doing. Schalke have accepted the financial conditions of Leon and his management.

He was also important for the sporting development of the team last summer and, after the first half of the season, we’re in second place and in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Leon can and must decide now.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been touted as a potential Philippe Coutinho replacement for Liverpool this month following the Brazilian’s £142m move to Barcelona.
