The Cameroonian international’s contract with the German club expires this summer, and despite them offering him a new deal to stay at the club, he is expected to leave to join Jurgen Klopp’s side on a free transfer.
According to the report, the defender is expected to announce his decision before Schalke’s game with Mainz on Friday evening.
Schalke will try one final time to keep the 24-year-old at the club, but it appears that he has his heart set on a move having been at the club since he was nine-years-old.
When asked why he wants to leave, he said:
The opportunity to gain new experiences, learn a new language and experience a different type of football.
Liverpool’s defending has been a concern for Klopp ever since he arrived at club, so it makes sense that he’ll look to bring in somebody he knows a lot about having seen Matip up close during his time managing Borussia Dortmund.
