With just days before the January transfer window closes, Liverpool have made an offer for Schalke defender Joel Matip, according to Sky Sports.

Earlier in the month, there were multiple reports from BILD and Kicker that Liverpool were interested in the Cameroon international, Sky Sports have reported that the five-time European Cup winners have made a bid.

Matip, 24, is out of contract at the end of the season and is understood to have asked for a move away, despite Schalke wanting him to sign a new contract.

Matip could be the solution Liverpool are looking for, he would undoubtedly stabilise the defence which has leaked 32 goals in just 23 Premier League games. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will know all about Matip from his time with Bundesliga giants Dortmund and the qualities that Matip can bring to the team.

Matip, 24, is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the Bundesliga and has been a key performer in the team since making his debut aged 18 under Felix Magath.
