Schalke defender Joel Matip has agreed a deal in principle to join Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, according to a report in The Mirror.
Matip has been at Schalke since the age of nine but has apparently decided that it is time for a change and with his contract expiring in the summer, the 24-year-old had decided to take up the offer to join Liverpool.
The Reds have been able to have contact with Matip’s representatives since the transfer window opened, and it seems that they’ve come to an agreement to bring the Cameroonian international to Merseyside.
This news all but confirms that veteran defender Kolo Toure will leave in the summer when his deal expires, but with Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Tiago Ilori and now Matip on the books, Jurgen Klopp will likely let at least one more defender leave.
The news also means that Steven Caulker’s loan at Liverpool is likely to be just a short-term fix and that he too will depart in the summer.
